My name is Brad Birkhimer and I am an 1800s blacksmith specializing in antique hardware, tooling and Historic Restoration.
My passion for blacksmithing began in 2004 when I decided, after many years of machining and welding in local industry, I wanted to learn the earliest form of welding and iron working.
So, I bought a book, began studying, built a forge, bought an anvil and started working iron.
After three years of self teaching, I began my apprenticeship at Roscoe Village under the instruction of Master Blacksmith, George Richey. Apprenticing under George was an awesome experience. He taught me many things that you just can’t learn by reading a book. Not only did he teach me how to work the fire and the iron and the techniques of blacksmith, he also taught me a lot of the history and folklore behind the blacksmith.
In 2009 George retired from Roscoe Village and I have been honored with the title of “Master Blacksmith” at Roscoe Village!
Roscoe Village is a beautifully restored 1800s canal town which features many artisans of the era.
Along with the custom iron working and historic restorations, I offer “The Blacksmith Experience” which is hands-on blacksmithing in an 1800s setting where you will learn the art of blacksmith and its history.
Thank you for visiting my site. I hope you enjoy “The Blacksmith Experience”!
