Blacksmithing Basics – ABANA Level I Blacksmithing Class
Build a strong foundation in traditional blacksmithing with this hands-on course based on the ABANA Level I curriculum.
Designed for beginners and those looking to strengthen their fundamental skills, this class introduces the essential techniques every blacksmith should know. You’ll spend plenty of time at the forge and anvil learning proper technique, safe shop practices, fire management, and effective use of traditional blacksmithing tools.
Throughout the course, you’ll complete a series of projects designed to develop your skills and confidence while working toward the competencies established by the Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA).
What You’ll Learn
- Hammer Control & Anvil Techniques – Develop proper striking techniques, hammer control, posture, and efficient use of the anvil.
- Essential Forging Skills – Practice drawing out, tapering, bending, twisting, punching, drifting, and other foundational techniques.
- Traditional Tool Use – Learn to properly use hammers, tongs, chisels, punches, and other common blacksmithing tools.
- Hands-On Projects – Complete a series of practical projects, such as S-hooks, drive hooks, and basic tools, that reinforce the skills required at the ABANA Level I level.
Who Is This Class For?
No previous blacksmithing experience is required. This course is ideal for anyone who wants more than a one-time introduction and is interested in developing a solid, well-rounded foundation in the craft of blacksmithing.
ABANA Level I Certification
This course is designed around the ABANA Level I curriculum and skills requirements. Participants wishing to receive an official ABANA Level I certificate must meet ABANA's applicable requirements, including membership. Whether your goal is to pursue blacksmithing as a hobby, continue into more advanced training, or simply learn the traditional skills of working hot steel at the anvil, this course will give you the foundation to continue forging with confidence.
